When people think about omega-3, they often associate it with a shiny coat, healthy skin, or cardiovascular health. In reality, its role goes much deeper.

Omega-3 fatty acids are among the most fundamental building blocks of life.

Every cell in the body—whether human or animal—is surrounded by a membrane, and 40–50% of that membrane consists of fats. The quality of these fats determines how efficiently cells communicate, absorb nutrients, and perform their functions.

When omega-3 intake is sufficient:

✅ cells communicate more efficiently;
✅ metabolism functions optimally.

When omega-3 is lacking, membranes become more rigid, cellular communication slows down, and organ function gradually declines. This is why omega-3 deficiency rarely causes a single disease—it contributes to a slow deterioration of overall health.

🧠 The brain is built on DHA

Nearly 60% of the brain's structure is made of fat, with DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) being one of its most important components.

DHA supports:

• brain development;
• learning and memory;
• concentration;
• stress resilience;
• nervous system function.

This applies to both humans and companion animals.

Studies have shown that puppies and kittens receiving adequate DHA learn faster, adapt more easily to new environments, and respond better to training. In senior pets, DHA helps support cognitive function and healthy brain aging.

🌱 Not all omega-3s are the same

Omega-3 is not a single nutrient—it is a family of fatty acids.

The three main forms are:

• ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) – found in flaxseed, chia, and walnuts;
• EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) – primarily involved in regulating inflammation;
• DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) – essential for the brain, nervous system, and retina.

The body converts only a very small amount of plant-based ALA into EPA and even less into DHA.

Conversion is limited in humans, inefficient in dogs, and almost nonexistent in cats.

That is why marine sources providing EPA and DHA are particularly important.

EPA helps regulate inflammation, supports joint health, skin health, lipid metabolism, and cardiovascular function.

DHA is essential for brain development, cognitive performance, vision, and nervous system health.

Because the body converts very little EPA into DHA—or vice versa—both forms are important.

For general health, an EPA:DHA ratio of approximately 2:1 is commonly used, although the ideal balance may vary depending on individual needs.
